Barakaldo, industrial suburb, northern Vizcaya provincia (province), in the comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Basque Country, northeastern Spain. It lies on the south bank of the Nervión River. The city was traditionally known for manufacturing shipbuilding equipment. Its modern-day economic activities include iron refining and the manufacture of steel tubing and machinery. It is the terminus of a mining railway. Pop. (2007 est.) mun., 96,412.
