Tupiza, town, southwest Bolivia. It lies in a region of the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 9,800 feet (2,990 metres) about 130 miles (210 km) west of Tarija. Once a thriving mining centre, Tupiza is mainly a commercial and trade hub; however, some nearby mining operations remained after the collapse of tin prices in the mid-1980s. Tupiza is near the town of San Vicente, close to which American outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were said to have been gunned down by Bolivian troops. Pop.
