Uppingham

Uppingham, town (parish) in the unitary authority and historic county of Rutland, east-central England.

The town is noted for its 16th-century houses and its public (independent secondary) school. It came into being as a market town and is located in what is still a predominantly agricultural area. Uppingham School (1584) still has its original building; under Edward Thring as headmaster, it became a school of great educational influence. Pop. (2001) 3,947; (2011) 4,745.
