velvet water bug
velvet water bug, (family Hebridae), any of approximately 120 species of insects in the true bug order, Heteroptera, that are covered with fine, velvetlike hairs. The bodies of these small, plump insects are usually less than 3 mm (0.1 inch) long. Although relatively rare, they can be found in freshwater habitats throughout the world and may be seen walking or running on the moist ground at the edge of a body of water or on the water surface. They are thought to be predacious.
