Adolphe

Adolphe, novel by Benjamin Constant, published in 1816. Written in a lucid classical style, Adolphe describes in minute analytical detail a young man’s passion for a woman older than himself. A forerunner of the modern psychological novel, it is a thinly disguised account of the end of Constant’s passionate 14-year relationship with Madame de Staël, a well-known (and married) woman of letters.
