Waterberg Series, major division of rocks in southern Africa. The age of the Waterberg is in doubt; it is possible that the Waterberg is late Precambrian or Early Paleozoic (older or younger than 540 million years, respectively). Waterberg rocks consist of several thousand feet of brown, red, and purple sandstones and some rather minor shales. Sedimentary structures such as ripple marks, desiccation cracks, and current bedding are prominent features in the almost flat-lying Waterberg rocks. As yet no evidence of fossilized organisms has been found in them.
