Watford, town and borough (district), administrative and historic county of Hertfordshire, England. It is situated on the northwest periphery of London and on the Rivers Colne and Gade and the Grand Union Canal.
Watford is primarily a residential town for London commuters and a shopping and educational center. Formerly, industries—printing, breweries, engineering, and chemical works—were important, but services now constitute the bulk of economic activity in the district. A number of major motion pictures—most notably entries in the Harry Potter franchise—have been filmed at a large studio just north of the town since the mid-1990s. In 2010 Warner Bros. purchased the site and dubbed it Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Area 8 square miles (21 square km). Pop. (2023 est.) 104,195.
