Boa Vista Island
Boa Vista Island, easternmost island of Cape Verde, in the Atlantic Ocean, 300 miles (500 km) off the western African coast. It rises to an elevation of 1,269 feet (387 metres). The chief town is Sal Rei, on the northwest coast. Salt and archil (a plant yielding a violet dye) are produced. Area 239 square miles (620 square km). Pop. (2005 est.) 5,398.
