Paul Willems (born April 4, 1912, Edegem, Belgium—died November 29, 1997, Zoersel) was a Belgian novelist and playwright whose playful strategies and fascination with language, doubles, analogies, and mirror images mask a modern tragic sensibility. He expressed the identity crisis of postwar Belgium in an idiosyncratic and often savagely ironic style.
Willems was the son of the Belgian writer Marie Gevers, and he grew up on his family’s estate near Antwerp in a river and coastal setting whose influence can be felt in his work. A francophone Flemish writer like his mother before him, Willems began by writing novels. Tout est réel ici (1941; “Everything is Real Here”) is magic realist in mood; L’Herbe qui tremble (1942; “Trembling Grass”), written in the form of a private journal, is a poetic essay on the theme of earthly paradise; the multiple narrators of Le Chronique du cygne (1949; “Chronicle of the Swan”) tell an allegorical tale of paradise found.
In the late 1940s Willems turned to the theatre. His first play, Le Bon Vin de Monsieur Nuche (“The Good Wine of Monsieur Nuche”), was produced in 1949 and published in a literary journal in 1954. His best-known play is Il pleut dans ma maison (1962; It’s Raining in My House). It revives Willems’s earlier theme of paradise found but has an underlying pessimism. Warna, ou le poids de la neige (1963; The Weight of the Snow) remains his darkest, most scathing play.
Willems’s mature period began with his most critically acclaimed play, La Ville à voile (1967; The Sailing City), a highly poetic drama about Antwerp which turns on the theme of memory. The prose work Le Pays noyé (1990; “The Drowned Land”) and the play La Vita breve (1989; “The Brief Life,” published with La Ville à voile) expand his vision of life as mystery and tragic farce. His plays were widely translated, and they have been performed in many countries.
Additional works by Willems include two short-story collections, La Cathédrale de brume (1983; “The Cathedral of Haze”) and La Vase de Delft (1995; “The Delft Vase”), a radio play, a television play, and two volumes of essays. Four of Willems’s plays were published in Dreams and Reflections (1992), including The Weight of the Snow, The Sailing City, It’s Raining in My House, and She Confused Sleeping and Dying.
