Skiers, climbers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers can accidentally trigger an avalanche. Avalanches also have been triggered intentionally by people using explosive blasts and in warfare to kill enemy troops. In World War I more than 10,000 troops were killed in a single day by avalanches triggered by artillery fired onto slopes of unstable snow.
