How did Vlad the Impaler change the world?

Vlad the Impaler was a minor player during the early period of Ottoman domination of what is today Romania, though he did become a local folk hero. He likely would have remained a historical curiosity known only to scholars of the region had it not been for Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, published in 1897. Stoker may have taken some inspiration from Vlad to create the archetypal vampire.
