In 1876 Robert Louis Stevenson met and fell in love with Fanny Osbourne, an American separated from her husband. She returned to California in 1878. Stevenson followed in 1879. His adventures, including nearly dying and eking out a precarious living in Monterey and San Francisco, culminated in marriage to Fanny (by then divorced) in 1880.
