DVD region codes are codes that prevent DVDs from being played in a geographic area outside the one they were intended for. The codes are used by entities that own or manage the content on a DVD to control its distribution. There are eight DVD regions, numbered 1 through 8, six of which cover the world’s countries and two of which have special uses. (A zero is used to designate DVDs without geographic restrictions.)
