The 14th Dalai Lama is known for his advocacy of Buddhism, his support for the rights of the people of Tibet, and his commitment to nonviolence. He is recognized among Tibetans as a spiritual leader and around the world as an influential religious thinker and speaker. He has written extensively about Buddhism—in particular, Tibetan Buddhism—and the relationship between Buddhism and science. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.
