The results of a 2024 population study strongly suggested that the slender-billed curlew has died out. This study—buoyed by the lack of confirmed sightings of the bird since the 1990s—led several conservation organizations to formally declare the species extinct. The IUCN, however, continues to classify the slender-billed curlew as a critically endangered species until the organization can conduct a formal assessment.
