Ludwig Mies (who added his mother’s surname, van der Rohe, when he became an established architect) was the son of a master mason. In 1913 Mies married Ada Bruhn, with whom he had three daughters—Georgia, Marianne, and Waltraut. After separating from his wife about 1920, Mies had several companions, notably Lora Marx.
