Robert Schumann’s father was a bookseller and publisher. His family encouraged him to enter the University of Leipzig as a law student. Schumann, however, studied piano seriously with the celebrated teacher, Friedrich Wieck. He fell in love with Wieck’s gifted daughter, Clara. They married in 1840—despite her father’s objections—and had eight children.
