Tank Man was most likely protesting the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) violent crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters in 1989. What started as a funeral for political leader Hu Yaobang became a large-scale protest against the Chinese government. When this happened, the CCP sent the army to suppress the protests, resulting in hundreds killed and thousands injured. Tank Man stood in front of the tanks after the army had established firm control over central Beijing.
