The U.S. government officially acknowledged the existence of Area 51 in 2013, when it released a formerly classified CIA document about the history of the U-2 spy plane. Test flights of the U-2, which were carried out at Area 51 during the 1950s, accounted for many of the UFO sightings in the area; it could reach altitudes much higher than any other planes at the time.
