For generations of labour leaders and leftist-oriented activists, artists, and intellectuals, the Haymarket demonstrators and their leaders were heroes and martyrs of the international struggle for workers' rights. In 1889 the Haymarket Affair was commemorated in the designation of May 1, or May Day, as International Workers' Day by the Second (Socialist) International, a federation of socialist parties and unions based in Europe. May Day continues to be celebrated in many countries.
