Århus, or Aarhus, Seaport (pop., 2022: 285,273), eastern Jutland, Denmark. It lies along Århus Bay and has an extensive harbour. Its origins are unknown, but it became a bishopric in 948 ce and, with its many religious institutions, prospered during the Middle Ages. In modern times, industrialization and harbour expansion have made it Denmark’s second largest city.
