Julie Andrews, in full Dame Julie Andrews, orig. Julia Elizabeth Wells, (born Oct. 1, 1935, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, Eng.), British-U.S. actress and singer. She made her London debut at age 12 in a revue and her New York City stage debut in The Boy Friend (1954). A major star of the Broadway musical, she originated the roles of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady (1956) and Guinevere in Camelot (1960). She subsequently starred in films, notably Mary Poppins (1964, Academy Award), The Sound of Music (1965), and Victor/Victoria (1982), one of several movies she made with her husband, director Blake Edwards. Among her later films were Duet for One (1986) and The Princess Diaries (2001) and its sequel (2004). Andrews had voice roles in a number of movies, including Enchanted (2007), three installments of the Shrek series (2004, 2007, and 2010), and Despicable Me (2010). In 2000 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
