Ordovician Period, Interval of geologic time, 485.4–443.4 million years ago, the second oldest period of the Paleozoic Era. It follows the Cambrian and precedes the Silurian Period. During the Ordovician, many of the landmasses were aligned in the tropics. Life was dominated by marine invertebrates, but some forms of land plants may have appeared during the early part of the period. Spores suggesting a tropical terrestrial environment have been found in rocks of that age. At the close of the Ordovician, rapid cooling and glaciation combined with a substantial fall in sea level produced a significant mass extinction event, second only to the Permian extinction in severity.
