Puducherry, Union territory, India. Area: 190 sq mi (492 sq km). Population: (2011) 1,244,464. Capital: Puducherry city. It was formed in 1962 from the four former French colonies of Pondicherry, Karikal, and Yanam, on the eastern (Bay of Bengal) seacoast, and Mahe, on the western (Arabian Sea) coast; it is united by little other than its colonial past and focus on tourism.
