Below is the article summary. For the full article, see osmium.

osmium, Metallic chemical element, chemical symbol Os, atomic number 76. It was discovered in 1804. Its name derives from the Greek word for “odour,” for the unpleasant smell of some of its compounds. This gray-white metal is the densest naturally occurring element. Osmium is very hard, brittle, and difficult to work, even at high temperatures. It has been used chiefly as a hardener in alloys of the platinum metals. Osmium tetroxide is sometimes used to stain tissues for microscopic examinations.
