synthetic biology, Field of research in which the main objective is to create fully operational biological systems (e.g., bacteria) from the smallest constituent parts possible, including DNA, proteins, and other organic molecules. Synthetic biology makes use of many different scientific techniques and approaches. The common goal is to create synthetic systems and organisms that operate like biological “factories” or “computers,” producing organic products of value to medicine, agriculture, and other industries. Similar to other biotechnologies, synthetic biology is not without risks; thus, risk assessment and ethical considerations are important components of the field.
