ytterbium, Chemical element in the lanthanide series, chemical symbol Yb, atomic number 70. This relatively soft, silvery white metal was named after the Swedish town of Ytterby, where it was discovered in 1878. Ytterbium has a low melting point and is used as a doping material in lasers.
