autostrada, national Italian expressway system built by the government as toll roads. The first, from Venice to Turin, was begun in 1924; construction was continuing in the early 1980s. The autostrada has three undivided lanes on a 33-foot (10-metre) roadway with 3-ft shoulders. Access is limited, with restrictions on commercial vehicles.
