Episodios nacionales
- Spanish:
- “National Episodes”
Episodios nacionales, vast series of short historical novels, comprising 46 volumes, by Benito Pérez Galdós, published between 1873 and 1912. The scope and subject matter of these novels—the history and society of 19th-century Spain—put Pérez Galdós in the company of such writers as Honoré de Balzac and Charles Dickens. Based on exacting research involving such documents as memoirs, old newspaper articles, and eyewitness accounts, the works are vivid and realistic.
The first grouping, composed of 10 books published from 1873 to 1875, covers the period of Spanish history from 1805 to 1812. The second grouping, also 10 volumes, treats the period 1812–33 during the reign of Fernando (Ferdinand) VII. The third grouping covers the Carlist wars; the fourth, 1846–68; and the fifth, comprising only 6 volumes, the period from 1869 to the Bourbon restoration in 1874. The books of the fifth series show a decline in Pérez Galdós’s mental powers.
