 New Mexico flagNew Mexico's first flag, adopted on March 19, 1915, was one of the few state flags to incorporate the U.S. flag in its design. Another distinctive flag was adopted on March 15, 1925. It features a sun symbol created by the people of the Zia Pueblo. It represents the state's perennial sunshine and pays tribute to the Zia. Red and yellow are the colors of Spain, which once ruled the area. |

 Utah state flagFor more than a century the flag of Utah featured the state seal at its center. In 2024, however, the state adopted an entirely new design. The new flag features a dark blue band at the top, symbolizing Utah's skies and lakes. The white band in the middle, with its jagged top, represents the state's snowcapped mountains. The red band at the bottom symbolizes the red-rock canyons in the southern part of the state. At the center of the flag is a gold beehive representing the state's early history as well as the state motto, “Industry.” Below that is a white five-pointed star, representing the star that was added to the U.S. flag when Utah became a state in 1896. |
 Virginia state flagVirginia's flag, formally adopted in 1930, actually dates from the American Civil War, having been designed soon after Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861. A deep blue field bears the state seal in the center upon a white circle. Virginia's flag is unique among the state flags in that it may be trimmed with white fringe down the fly edge (the side opposite the flagpole). |
