Kuvempu University, institution of higher education in western Karnataka state, southern India. The university, established in 1987, is named for the Kannada-language writer K.V. Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu. Its main campus is situated in a rural setting about 17 miles (28 km) south of Shimoga (Shivamogga). There is a postgraduate centre in the town of Kadur southeast of the main campus, two constituent colleges are in Shimoga, and several dozen colleges and research institutions throughout the region are affiliated with the university. Academic schools include those for biological sciences; chemical sciences; education; earth sciences and environmental science; economics and business study; languages, literature, and fine arts; law; physical sciences; and social sciences.
