Marlowe is a hard-boiled private detective working in the seamy underworld of Los Angeles from the 1930s through the 1950s. The novels, most of which have been made into films, include The Big Sleep (1939; filmed 1946 and 1978), Farewell, My Lovely (1940; filmed 1942 as Murder, My Sweet and 1975), The Lady in the Lake (1943; filmed 1947), Double Indemnity (1944; filmed 1944), and The Long Good-Bye (1953; filmed 1973 as The Long Goodbye).
