- In full:
- Pierre; or, The Ambiguities
Pierre, novel by Herman Melville, published in 1852. An intensely personal work, it reveals the somber mythology of Melville’s private life framed in terms of a story of an artist alienated from his society. The artist, Pierre Glendinning, is a wealthy young man. When he discovers that he has an illegitimate half sister, he tries to provide for her by taking her to live in New York City, where they live in poverty as he attempts to make a living as a writer. He ultimately destroys both of their lives as well as that of his fiancée. The novel, a slightly veiled allegory of Melville’s own dark imaginings, was rooted in his relationships with his own family.
