The museum features notable collections of canvases by Vincent van Gogh, artists of the De Stijl movement, and European and American trends since 1950.

Its artworks were first housed at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and moved in 1895 to the Stedelijk’s present location, a brick striped building designed by Adriaan Willem Weissman. The museum added an extension in the 1950s, and in the early 21st century the Stedelijk thoroughly renovated its original building. It also opened an addition in 2012.
