In Al-Lajnah (1981; The Committee), his best-known novel, he satirized Egyptian Pres. Anwar el-Sādāt’s policy of infitāḥ (Arabic: “opening”), which decentralized the economy and opened Egypt to foreign investment but failed to curb censorship. Because of that censorship, the novel had to be published in Lebanon.
