flag of the Northern Territory: References & Edit History
Researcher's Note
Official colours of the Northern Territory, Australia
The colours of the Northern Territory, as shown on its flag, were first officially recognized in 1964—not in June 1975 or August 1977 as reported in some sources—although the territorial legislature did not vote to accept the colours until 1975. The archives of the Department of the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory include the following statement, dated April 1, 1964, by the administrator, R.L. Dean:
It is hereby notified for general information that on the seventeenth day of February, 1964, His Honour the Administrator of the Northern Territory of Australia, having received the advice of the Administrator’s Council, determined the colours of Red Ochre, White and Black to be the official colours for the Northern Territory of Australia.
