November on the Hudson Bay in Canada - the polar bears are impatiently waiting for the bay to freeze over. Winter comes later each year to this part of the world and the bears are forced to wait longer before they can head out onto the sea ice to hunt their main prey, ringed seals. They have been trapped on the mainland for over four months. They have little choice but to wait.
The young males pass the time by pitting their strength against each other. Up on their hind legs, they stand nearly three meters tall. A single blow from the 800-kilo giants would kill a man on the spot.
It’s been a long wait for the bears, but at last the first signs of winter. Soon the bay will freeze over entirely and they will head out to feast on seals once more.
