In 1861 Mexico declared it would no longer honor foreign debts, leading England, Spain, and France to send in troops. By April 1862 England and Spain had pulled out, but France had hopes of establishing a monarchy in Mexico. On May 5th a poorly equipped Mexican force pulled off a decisive win over France.
