On July 1, 1867, the British Parliament granted Canada dominion status, allowing it a degree of self-rule. This day became annually celebrated as Dominion Day. Canada became completely politically independent in 1982, and the holiday was renamed Canada Day. The monarch of the United Kingdom is still the monarch of Canada.
