Many countries had bicycle battalions among their fighting forces during World War I. Bikes could hold more equipment than a soldier on foot could and, unlike horses, didn’t require food. As armies began using automobiles more, military bicycles fell out of favor. However, many Canadian soldiers brought foldable bikes onshore during the World War II Normandy invasion.
