Alborán Island, islet, belonging to Spain, in the western Mediterranean Sea. About 2 miles (3 km) long, Alborán lies roughly midway between Spain to the north and Morocco to the south. It is a station on the Almeria-Melilla undersea cable and is uninhabited except for lighthouse keepers. Alborán is also the name of the far western submarine basin of the Mediterranean centred on the islet.
