Asinara Island, island lying in the Mediterranean Sea off the northwest coast of Sardinia. It has an area of 20 square miles (52 square km) and rises to 1,335 feet (407 m). The island was home to one of Italy’s top-security prisons until it was closed in 1997. Asinara is now a marine and wildlife preserve and is accessible only through organized tours.
