Labrador City, town, southwestern Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, near the Quebec border. It was developed in the 1950s as a planned community to serve the surrounding mining region (Carol Lake), one of Canada’s largest producers of iron ore concentrates and pellets. The community has an airport and has rail connections with Schefferville, Quebec, 124 miles (200 km) north, and with Sept-Îles, Quebec, the ore transshipment port, 200 miles (320 km) south at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Inc. 1961 as a local improvement district and in 1980 as a town. Pop. (2006) 7,240; (2011) 7,367.
