Nova Iguaçu, city and suburb of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro estado (state), Brazil. Formerly called Maxambamba, it lies in the Sarapuí River valley at 85 feet (26 metres) above sea level, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Rio de Janeiro.
The city’s varied industries include marmalade and orange juice factories, vegetable canneries, and plants manufacturing chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Orange groves are still found in the rapidly shrinking agricultural hinterland. The main railroad and highway linking Rio de Janeiro with São Paulo pass nearby. Pop. (2000) 754,519; (2022) 819,134.
