Sangrur, town, southeastern Punjab state, northwestern India. It is situated about 30 miles (50 km west-southwest of Patiala.
The town was founded in the 17th century and became the capital of the former princely state of Jind. In 1948 it acceded to the Indian union along with other princely states in the region. Sangrur is an agricultural market with some light industry, including hand-loom weaving and handicrafts. There are good road and rail connections with the rest of Punjab and with neighbouring states.
Sangrur lies in a region that is generally flat and dry, with a large area under irrigation. The principal crops in the area are wheat, cotton, sugarcane, gram (chickpeas), and millet. Pop. (2001) 77,989; (2011) 88,043.
