Villarrobledo, city, Albacete provincia (province), in Castile–La Mancha comunidad autónoma (autonomous community), south-central Spain. It lies northwest of Albacete city on the plateau of La Mancha. The centre of a cattle-raising area, Villarrobledo also produces wine, cheese, cereals, and esparto fibre. The city was founded in the 13th century and named for a forest of oak trees (robles) in the vicinity. During the First Carlist War (1833–39), it was the scene of a battle (Sept. 20, 1836) in which government troops under Gen. Isidro Alaix defeated Carlist leader Miguel Gómez. Pop. (2008 est.) 26,306.
