Bertrand Russell’s childhood was grief-stricken and lonely. His mother and sister died when he was two years old, and his father died some 18 months later. He and his brother, Frank, were cared for by their paternal grandparents, but their grandfather died soon after Bertrand’s sixth birthday. Educated at home, he was isolated from other children.
