Kashmir, Region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent. The land is predominantly mountainous and includes K2 and other peaks of the Karakoram Range. Kashmir has a total area of some 85,800 square miles (222,200 square km), and its climate ranges from subtropical in the southwestern lowlands to alpine throughout the high mountain areas. Control of the region is disputed by India and Pakistan. The northern and western portions (Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan) are administered by Pakistan, while India administers the southern and southeastern portions (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh). In addition, China has controlled the northeastern part of Ladakh since 1962.
