tellurium, Metallic chemical element, chemical symbol Te, atomic number 52. It was isolated in 1782 and established as an element in 1798. Its name derives from the Latin word for “earth.” It is a silvery white metal that is used in some alloys to increase such properties as ductility and machinability.
