wind power, Electricity produced by turbines using the energy in winds. Though wind is irregular and spread out, it contains tremendous amounts of energy and is inexhaustible and nonpolluting. The use of wind in energy systems grew considerably in the 1980s and onward into the early 21st century as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels.
